40 square miles of savannah River site cleaned up early with stimulus funds

The Energy Department announced last week that the so-ncalled “M Area” at the Savannah River Site in South Carolina nhas been cleaned up nearly two years ahead of schedule.nDOE said the project was accelerated thanks to a $1.6-billion ninfusion from last year’s economic-stimulus law. n“M Area cleanup marks a significant step toward meeting nour environmental commitments at SRS, and toward reducing nthe operating footprint associated with the site’s past mission,” nsaid Ines Triay, DOE’s assistant secretary for environmental nmanagement. “At the same time, we were able to create or nretain more than 3,600 jobs at SRS and train those workers, nwhich are exactly the type of return we anticipated from our ninvestment in the Recovery Act program.”
