Illinois legislature approves energy bill, including Exelon nuclear subsidies

The Illinois Senate voted the afternoon of Sept. 13 to approve a clean energy bill that includes economic subsidies for three Exelon Generation nuclear power plants in the state. The company had said it would permanently shut Byron and Dresden this fall for economic reasons unless the subsidies are provided. SB 2408 received 37 votes in favor, one more than it needed to pass. Governor J.B. Pritzker has stated his support for the proposal, which includes annual subsidies for Exelon's Byron, Braidwood, and Dresden nuclear power plants. The Dresden nuclear plant was scheduled to shut in November unless the legislation passed.
