Fortescue plans to move iron ore workforce in hydrogen coaches by mid-2021

Australia's Fortescue Metals Group – the world's fourth-largest iron ore producer – is investing A$32 million ($23 million) to replace diesel coaches at one of its mining sites with hydrogen-powered ones. The Perth-based company said Aug. 17 that it will roll out 10 hydrogen coaches at its Christmas Creek operation in the Pilbara region of Western Australia by mid-next year. New York-headquartered Hyzon Motors will supply the fuel-cell coaches, which it imports into Australia fully built. It is the first time Hyzon has supplied coaches for use in a mining environment; it normally provides buses for city transport. Fortescue, which will install a refueling station that will use renewable electricity from its Chichester Solar Gas Hybrid Project to generate renewable hydrogen on site, has pledged to achieve "net zero operational emissions by 2040."
