FERC clears path for power industry reporting of cyber incidents that fail to disrupt grid

In an effort to better capture the true scope of cyber threats to theelectric grid, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission on Thursdayapproved a revised reliability standard that broadens mandatoryreporting requirements to include incidents that attempt tocompromise the grid.The current standard only requires reporting of incidents thatsuccessfully compromise or disrupt a reliability task, such as anincident causing an outage. As such, there were no reported incidentsin 2015 or 2016.
