Indonesia considers low rank coal incentives

Concern that the Indonesian government’s program tonrapidly expand domestic coal-fired power generation willneat into the country’s coal export capacity is growing,ndespite the hope that the domestic market will bensupplied by lower quality coals than those typicallynexported. Indonesia’s coal output is expected to rise byn20 million tons, or 9%, to 235 million mt, this year,naccording to Jeffrey Mulyono, chairman of the IndonesiannCoal Mining Association. But, Mulyono also estimatesnthat domestic coal consumption will rise by 73% to 95nmillion mt in 2009 from 55 million mt in 2008.nDomestic coal use is then expected to continue rising ton170 million mt between 2015 and 2020. Exports, it isnhoped, will remain at 150 million mt/year, despite thensharp rise in domestic consumption, a prospect thatnsome believe will be hard to achieve.
