The European Parliament voted on April 22 to adopt the informal compromise reached with EU governments on March 23 on five new EU power and gas market opening laws known collectively as the third energy package. The compromise saw Parliament drop its demand that full ownership unbundling be the only option in the EU power sector in return for more explicit consumer protection rights - a much more easily understood benefit to explain to voters as MEPs hit the campaign trail ahead of European elections on June 4-7.
