West European wind power additions in 2008 for the first time outstripped new gas-fired generation capacity, according to a preliminary survey of 17 markets by Platts Power in Europe. Around 7,400 MW of gas-fired capacity was commissioned in west Europe during 2008, compared with 8,133 MW of wind.rnWind additions in 2008 were nearly 200 MW less than 2007, owing to a 2 GW drop in Spanish wind additions, after 2007's astonishing 3.5 GW growth. However, Spain's 2007 figure may not be trustworthy, sector sources said January 23. A recalculation could see additions in Spain even out over the two-year period. Confirmation will come when the European Wind Energy Association publishes its own findings for the EU-27. Christian Kjaer, chief executive of the EWEA, said the association's own assessment for the EU-27 was likely to reach around 8,500 MW wind added last year.
