A nationwide coal mine safety check may tighten China's domestic coal supplies and push up domestic coal prices by 10-20% in the next few months, according to industry sources. A notice posted by the State Administration of Coal Mine Safety in early April, designed to prevent incidents similar to the two big coal mine accidents that occurred in March, says that a nationwide safety check will be conducted at all under-construction coal mines in April and May. A total of 7,000 coal shafts with a combined mining capacity of about 1.5 billion metric tons/year will be affected, Huang Yi, deputy commissioner of SACMS, said.
