Illinois is ramping up its efforts to land the $2 billion Department of Energy-backed FutureGen clean-coal project, proposing hundreds of billions of dollars in bonds to build the 275 MW plant in the town of Mattoon. The DoE and its private-sector partners, the FutureGen Alliance, are expected to make a final decision in February on whether to move forward with the project. The DoE has committed $1.1 billion in federal funds. The alliance's private-sector members are expected to provide the remaining $900 million.
