December EUA futures hit new low

EU Allowance futures for delivery in December on London's ICE Futures Europe exchange crashed through the €8.00/mt level to as low as €7.80 ($10.45/mt) November 24, down 64 euro cents on the day, or 7.6%, the lowest ever price for the most widely traded front-year EUA contract. The contracts previous intraday low was €8.31/mt seen February 12, 2009. December EUAs traded as high as €17.00/mt in May this year. The price of carbon has been hit hard in recent months by a combination of expected low future demand and anticipation of increasing supply of EUAs from planned auctions by the system's regulator, the European Commission.
