Chinese power sector drives gas demand

China is seeing no respite from the inexorable growth in electricity demand, according to a report issued in June by high-level planner the National Development and Reform Commission. The NDRC said power generation between June 1-13 was 14.73% higher than in the same period of 2010 at 169.622 TWh.The rate of increase in electricity generation exceeded growth posted in May by 2.19 percentage points, the NDRC said. It added that it was also higher than the year-on-year increase in the first five months of 2011 by 2.13 percentage points. Power consumption growth was fastest in the eastern, central and southern regions, and was attributed to rising temperatures and air conditioner use. The southern coastal regions are also home to the majority of China's export industries.
