EU carbon allowances rally in August

Prices for December 2012 EU carbon dioxide allowances climbed steadily through August, rising to €8.17 ($10.23/ mt) August 23, the highest point since July 5, owing to continued upward momentum on European financial markets and a better supported power market. The price move reflects a rebound from July 30 when the price of EUAs dropped to €6.65/mt in the wake of a proposal by the European Commission to amend the EU Emissions Trading System directive to give the Commission legal authority to delay the timing of auctions within a trading period under exceptional circumstances.
