Alberta strategic plan to recommend both rail and pipe options

The use of both pipelines and railways would be the "prudent" solution for Alberta's oil producers to open up new export markets, or face the threat of having over 3 million b/d of stranded output by 2020, according to Robert Fernandez, executive director of the Alberta Economic Development Authority. "We have just another eight years to address this issue and that is not a long time. It cannot just be the Northern Gateway or the Keystone XL or the TransMountain pipelines or rail cars. Rather it has to be a combination of all," Fernandez said. The AEDA expects to include this recommendation in its 2012-2015 Strategic Plan for the Canadian province, due out in September.
