Indian coal shortages threaten power sector

India's coal reserves were assessed in April at 286 billion mt, the third largest in the world after China and the US. Proved reserves at about 114 billion mt should last for well over 100 years at current rates of production of about 550 million mt a year. However, getting the coal out of the ground and to market faces huge structural problems that has resulted in growing shortages. Imports are expected to rise, but the power generation sector cannot absorb the increased fuel cost.
