Steady gains for CO2 as reform hopes firm

The price of CO2 allowances under the EU Emissions Trading Scheme saw a second month of gains in November, rising to €7.05/mt ($8.79/mt) November 24 for delivery in December 2014, up from €6.59/mt at the start of the month and €5.81/mt at the beginning of October. This is the first time prices have traded above the €7.0/mt mark since February. A series of auctions by the EU and member state governments saw prices rise steadily with Germany selling 2.353 million allowances for €6.60/mt November 7, with bids sufficient to cover 2.37 times the available volume. On November 20, the EU sold 1.873 million allowances at auction for €6.93/mt, with enough bids to cover 3.29 times the available volume.
