Australian carbon tax repeal faces setback

Australia's Senate rejected in December one of the 11 bills that make up the government's proposed repeal of the country's carbon tax. Labor and Greens party senators voted in December against the shutdown of the Clean Energy Finance Corp., which was set up by the previous Labor government to fund clean energy projects. A majority of senators earlier agreed to vote on each of the 11 bills in the government's carbon tax repeal package, which the House of Representatives passed in its entirety November 21. Labor and Greens hold the balance of power in the Senate, whereas Australia's governing Liberal-National party coalition has a majority in the lower house.
