Venezuela under Hugo Chavez and then Nicolas Maduro has followed the copybook trajectory of a failing socialist state: gaining public support with ambitious and well-intentioned social programs, but hugely intolerant of internal and international criticism. Political opponents have been jailed and convenientlytimed 'coup attempts' uncovered to divert attention from domestic economic woes.
