Stand in the garden of a house in London’s Waterloornarea by the Thames and it is impossible not to noticernthe pattern of aircraft above. Some will be circlingrnwestward preparing to land at Heathrow, the world’srnthird busiest airport by passenger numbers. Many ofrnthese are long-haul planes arriving from as far away asrnBeijing or San Francisco. They come in a continuousrnstream with one landing every 45 seconds.
