EU backs 32% RES goal for 2030

The EU has informally agreed to source 32% of its final energy demand from renewables and improve its energy efficiencyrnby 32.5% by 2030. It has also agreed a compliance regime to ensure the targets are met.rnThese targets are higher than the at least 27% for renewables and 30% for energy efficiency that the EuropeanrnCommission proposed in its November 2016 clean energy package legislation. This could dampen EU carbon prices in thernEU Emissions Trading System in the long term by cutting emissions faster than previously expected.rnIt also means the EU could overshoot its already agreed binding 2030 target to cut its emissions by at least 40% on 1990rnlevels. The 40% target was based on the Commission's modeling of what was cost-effective assuming a 27% renewablesrnand 30% efficiency target.
