Switzerland's Federal Nuclear Safety Commission (NSC), which advises the government on nuclear safety, is to be strengthened in the wake of on-going criticism of the Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate (ENSI) for its lack of independence. Energy minister Doris Leuthard is planning to beef up the NSC's Secretariat and increase attendance fees paid to its experts, whose tasks have multiplied in efforts to monitor the Swiss nuclear industry's adaptation to post-Fukushima safety requirements, while at the same time monitoring Switzerland's on-going search for a radwaste burial site from a short list of six. ENSI has now published "lessons from Fukushima", saying there is need for a rethink of planning against a nuclear disaster in collaboration with nuclear power station operators, the police, civil protection and the army.
