Swissgrid tests burial option

Swiss transmission grid operator Swissgrid plans to test the feasibility of burying sections for future extensions of the 380 kV grid. The change of heart follows a decision of the Federal Supreme Court concerning the Riniken section. The court noted that underground cable technology now offers better performance as well as greater reliability and cost-effectiveness. Following this decision the Federal Administrative Court in September ruled in favor of the commune of Tuggen and landowners in canton Schwyz and against Axpo and the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE), calling on Axpo to explore the possibility of burial for the Grynau-Siebnen grid section.
