Greek minister of environment, energy and climate change Giorgos Papaconstantinou has launched an ambitious plan to install 10 GW of solar photovoltaics in Greece by 2050. Speaking at the 26th EU PVSEC conference in Hamburg September 5, Papaconstantinou said 'Project Helios' would aim to have 2.2 GW installed by 2020, climbing to 10 GW by 2050. The project is estimated to involve investment of €20 billion and cover a total area of 20,000 hectares. The minister said Greece would look to cooperate with other EU countries in support of the program, and seek to export green power to the EU as a result. Greece enjoyed about 300 days of strong sunlight a year, producing much higher rates of radiation than in Germany, Papaconstantinou said.
