Dutch green target rises to 16%

The Netherlands' coalition government has no time to lose if it wants to achieve its new renewables target of 16% of energy production by 2020.This was the message from sector associations and commentators following announcement of a coalition agreement between the left-of-center PvDA party and the right-of-center WD party on October 29.The agreement includes the ambitious new renewables target and a €400 million/yr boost to green energy funding.A 16% target is two percentage points higher than the Netherlands' commitment under the EU renewable energy directive. Indeed the old 14% target remains ambitious in itself. Commenting on this, Dutch energy research center ECN said that its most recent estimates indicate that the Netherlands would be at 9-12% by 2020.
