Mixed signals for Muehleberg

The Swiss authorities have authorized BKW to proceed with a CHF 12 million project to strengthen the wall of the Wohlensee dam upstream from the Muehleberg nuclear power station. An appeal court on September 30 rejected objections claiming that the work would actually weaken the dam. BKW is looking at three dates for the decommissioning of the nuclear plant, CEO Suzanne Thoma said September 28: 2017, requiring no further investments; 2019 with an investment in security measures of several hundred million francs; and 2026, requiring a major investment. Thoma said BKW investments in renewables would increasingly be in Germany and Italy now that energy minister Doris Leuthard has amended energy legislation to reduce federal subsidies for renewables.
