Macedonia's Ministry of Economy has applied for funds from the 2008 state budget to prepare and call tenders related to potential oil exploration in the country. The ministry is now awaiting a green light from the finance ministry before launching the first tender for consulting services for oil exploration.rnThe two most likely sites for any future oil exploration in Macedonia are the Ovce Polje field and the Tikves region. These were already the focus of preliminary exploration activities several decades ago, when Serbia's NIS Naftagas failed to discover commercially viable oil reserves in Macedonia. However, at that time the company did not drill wells to depths of more than 2,000 meters. In 2006, Canada's Bankers Petroleum approached Macedonian authorities with a proposal for exploration, but no agreement was reached and the project faltered.
