Small hydro set for construction

Construction of the first of 35 small hydropower plants, with a combined installed capacity of 97.4 MW and estimated total annual production of 302.5 GWh, awarded concessions by the government of Montenegro, is expected to start within the next few months, according to a report approved by the government in October. Six companies awarded concessions in September 2008 in the first of two tenders have applied for construction permits, having completed exploratory works, finalized project designs and prepared pre-feasibility studies, the report said. Once permits are issued, construction can begin, and licenses for water usage and electricity generation will be awarded. "Construction of these projects will be finalized in the next six to 24 months, and electricity production is expected in 2013-2014," the Montenegrin government said.
