Chevron ponders shale gas exit

Chevron could quit Polish shale gas exploration if changes are not made to the lengthy permitting process for exploration wells before year-end, the daily Rzeczpospolita reported June 5. The daily said the US major, which has drilled three exploration wells in its four Polish concessions to date, is particularly concerned about existing regulations that require operators to apply for separate environmental permits every time they want to drill an exploration well deeper than one thousand meters. The permitting process can take four to five months, the daily said. "If the regulations are not changed by the end of the year Chevron will leave Poland," Polish MEP, Boguslaw Sonik, told the daily. Chevron denied they had plans to withdraw from shale gas exploration in Poland, Rzeczpospolita added.
