Illinois high-level meetings seek compromise in electric rate crisis

High-level hush-hush talks replaced legislative action last week as major players in Illinois' long-running electric rate drama searched for an elusive compromise. None was forthcoming by week's end, but not for lack of effort. Two main protagonists, House Speaker Michael Madigan and Senate President Emil Jones, both Chicago Democrats, held a series of private meetings with the state's two largest electric companies, Commonwealth Edison and Ameren, key lawmakers and even representatives from the state Attorney General's office in hopes of finding common ground.
