Vectren inks deal to buy 100 MW for 3 years; withdraws bid to build 100-MW peaking unit

Last year, Vectren bowed out of Duke Energy Indiana's controversial 630-MW coal gasification project, opting for a smaller, less expensive and lower profile natural gas-fired peaker. Now, Evansville, Indiana-based Vectren has scrapped plans to build a 100-MW combustion turbine, deeming it less risky to go with a power purchase agreement instead. Vectren's newly signed three-year deal to buy 100 MW from San Diego, California-based Sempra Energy starts in 2010 and runs through 2012. That means Vectren has delayed any decision to construct a peaker-the abandoned project would have been located near Princeton in Gibson County, about 20 miles north of Evansville-for at least four years.
