Calpine-NRG merger would create national generation giant, bigger than any utility

For the first time in the US a merchant generator could, if a deal goes through, be bigger than any utility in terms of capacity. Last week, NRG Energy, the merchant power company once owned by Xcel Energy, and Calpine, the quintessential merchant with 24,000 MW of natural gas-fired capacity, acknowledged they are talking about a merger. The proposed stock-for-stock acquisition may not go through, but four hedge funds who own 48% of the company and have representatives on Calpine's board, have publicly expressed support for it.
