Wellinghoff touts growing importance of gas, urges further maximizing its value for power

Integrating cleaner natural gas-fired generation is essential nto replace the 20% of coal-fired generation — about 60 GW — nexpected to go offline by as soon as 2015 because of changes in nenvironmental policy, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission nChairman Jon Wellinghoff told a Houston audience last week.nAs the amount of wind and solar generation increase, gas ngeneration will become even more important because of its flex-nibility, said Wellinghoff at a breakfast hosted by Black & Veatch in nHouston. It can be used throughout the spectrum of power pro-nduction from baseload power, peaking power and even ancillary nservices. The natural gas industry will need to be ready to make ndeliverable fuel to replace a large part of those retirements.
