The Iowa Utilities Board launched an inquiry into how federalnenvironmental regulations will affect utility plans for their coalfirednpower plants and the rates they charge their customers.nLike other Midwestern states, Iowa depends heavily on coal tonmake electricity. MidAmerican Energy owns 7,094 MW of variousnresources, including 3,420 MW of coal capacity, which is almostnhalf its fleet. Interstate Power & Light, an Alliant Energy subsidiary,nowns stakes in ten coal plants totaling 1,542 MW, or about 61% ofnits entire fleet. Iowa’s cooperative and municipal utilities also ownncoal-fired generation in Iowa and in nearby states.
