摘要

ADECADE AGO, Houston's Near Northside neighborhood was largely unknown to Houstonians living beyond its borders. That shouldn't have been the case; the 2.5-square-mile neighborhood is a historic part of the city, dating to the late 1800s, that borders downtown. Once predominantly Italian and German, today the community is around 80 percent Hispanic and 33 percent of residents live below the poverty level. It was often overlooked. "We didn't have a voice," says Gwyn Guidy, a longtime resident who serves on the board of the Lindale Park Civic Club in the northern portion of the community. Back then, the areas Super Neighborhood-the city-sanctioned neighborhood body-was defunct Many civic clubs had become inactive. And the area carried Little sway with local leaders.
