The Russians have arrived. In June, Gazprom Group announced its subsidiary, OAO Gazprom, would set up marketing and sales offices in the U.S. and France. The U.S. company would be Gazprom Marketing & Trading Ltd., based in Houston. Managing director for U.S. operations would be John Hattenberger, a long-time veteran of the North American natural gas business. Expanding its offices and business control is a logical step for the world's biggest natural gas producer. Looking at its history and prior moves, Gazprom wants to be more than just a supplier of natural gas and now crude oil; it wants in on the action from the ground to the burnertip! Marketing and trading offices in North America could not be in a better place since the U.S. is the world's largest natural gas and crude oil consumer.
