New Studies May Determine Outcome For Mackenzie Pipeline

The proposed Mackenzie Gas Project (MGP) may be languishing in bureaucratic offices in Canada, but apparently it is not ready to be killed off. Under the auspices of the seven-member Joint Review Panel (JRP), a series of hearings was held during 2007-08 to evaluate the potential effects of the project on the environment and lives of the people in the project area. The independent board is expected to release its findings sometime next year. A joint panel is the highest level of environmental assessment in Canada and its endorsement is critical to the ultimate outcome of the project. The panel was expected to hand down its report in late spring but instead decided it needed another year.
