Drilled method beats schedule to light Special Olympics torch

Working with a narrow installation window, construction crews installed a small diameter natural gas service line to fuel the torch for the 1995 Special Olympics World Games in New Haven, Connecticut. With the opening ceremonies only three weeks away, Southern Connecticut Gas Co. elected to use horizontal directional drilling to install the line instead of the traditional open ditch technique. Once the go ahead was issued, the construction crew, using powerful distribution-size equipment, had the fuel line in place with time to spare.
