Fabrication of patterned Au films as supporting templates for one-dimensional magnetic nanostructures

We developed a technique to fabricate one-dimensionally patterned ultrathin Au overlayers on the tungsten surface carbide W(110)/C-R(15X3) by self-organization. It was found that deposition of 1-3 monoatomic layers of Au on the R(15 X 3) carbon superstructure and subsequent annealing at 600℃ lead to the development of a Au overlayer the surface of which is one-dimensionally reconstructed with a periodicity of about 30 A. We present a characterization of this system by electron diffraction, scanning tunneling microscopy, and photoelectron spectroscopy to reveal the chemical composition of the created nanopattern. Eventually, the self-organization of Ni nanowires supported on such patterned Au film is demonstrated.
