Inter- and intraconfigurational luminescence of trivalent rare earth ions doped into strontium fluoride crystals under vacuum ultraviolet excitation

Excitation spectra for intra- (4f~n → 4f~n) and interconfigurational (4f~(n-1) 5d → 4f~n) radiative transitions of trivalent rare earth ions doped into SrF_2 crystals have been investigated using VUV synchrotron radiation. The intra-centre and band-to-band excitation mechanisms are discussed.
