I frequently turn to Gunilla Anderman's Europe on Stage: Translation and Theatre (2005), for research, for teaching preparation, and for the pleasure of her stylish and innovative exposition of the staging of canonic European playwrights in translation. It was with enthusiasm, then, that I approached the review of this edited collection of papers. But it is a melancholy book in some ways, marking the passing of two pioneering scholars: the translator and theatre academic Bill Findlay, and Anderman herself. Findlay's death, as the volume was being planned, transformed the contributions into a semi-festschrift in his honour. Anderman's death, as the collection was nearing completion, left a gap in her field of scholarship and, to some extent, in the editing detail of this book. Anderman's brief first chapter on Findlay's dialect translations embodies this loss in its tantalising glimpse of what admirers might have enjoyed had these two scholars been spared for longer.
