Hanshan shi: Wenben luwxing yu jingdian jiangou [Hanshan's poems: the traveling and canonization of the translated text]

This book is concerned with the translation of the poems by Hanshan, a monk during the Tang Dynasty, and their change of status until they became accepted as international classics. Researchers know very little about his life, but from the middle of the twentieth century, Hanshan became internationally famous for his Zen poems, which were favored by Western poets and readers. Before he became known in the West, Hanshan did not arouse much interest in China, reflecting his marginal position in Chinese literature history for more than 1,000 years. He was not part of mainstream classical literature in China, and was even forgotten by most later poets and scholars. The author of this book tries to delve into this interesting phenomenon as well as into the whole process of the canonization of Hanshan's poems by employing Said's Traveling Theory and Even-Zohar's Polysystem Theory. The book is divided into six chapters.
