From Mr John Williamson 'Rough Ride to Looe'. I used a picture of the stone block track beneath Moorswater viaduct showing FB rail. It is possible to make out fishplate joints. The picture was taken from a paper by L R Wood who was Head of the PW Dept of the GWR and was presented to the GWR Lecture & Debating Society on 25 January 1912. I used this picture in my paper The History of Track' presented to the Western Australia Section. A copy was sent to John Morgan. Broad Gauge Timbered Turnouts. Ref -Exeter-Newton Abbot, A Railway History by Peter Kay. The turnout at Saltash is no doubt baulk road. What appear to be timbers are undoubtedly transoms. Without having details of broad gauge track design I would expect a curved lead such as this to have extra transoms. There is however a photo of a timbered broad gauge turnout in Kay's book on p53 (see also PWI Journal Vol122 Pt 3 page 184). Here the transoms are quite clear and it is also possible to make out the junction between bull head and bridge rail. This is detailed in the GWR 'Green Book'.
