In the context of the announcement and coming of a sick newborn, the anticipation has to be made on a technical plan, that is, from the point of view of the organization of the medical care, and also from the point of view of the support and assistance for the parents to get ready for this painful situation. The place of follow-up of the pregnancy and the place of birth must be adapted to the pathology of the child. The prenatal consultation of the paediatrician has a fundamental place in the process of anticipation. The description of the disease and the course of care allows the parents to anticipate the situation of their child, and also to speak about the prognosis of the disease and the risks of the care. The limits of care wished by the parents, in particular in the limits of the viability or in case of diseases of a particular gravity, are to be exactly established. This whole approach allows organizing adapted and coherent care of the newborn from the delivery room to all along the route of the neonatal care. The prenatal consultation with the paediatrician that takes place in an atmosphere of empathy and sharing allows a necessary and fundamental humanizing support. This is necessary to singularly support the parental capacities of anticipation and to help the emergence of a representation of the future of this child and of its parents’ role.
