Causing Trauma as a Form of Trauma

This article offers an overview of the historical development and empirical work on the construct of perpetration-induced traumatic stress (PITS), the form of posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms caused by killing or otherwise committing violence as the stressor. Three additional challenges are addressed: treatment needs, the mechanism whereby the symptoms cause further violence, and policy implications.
