In the mid-nineties, most accounting programs were still dealing with the slow transition from character-based computing to Windows. While DacEasy and Peachtree offered DOS-based programs that provided impressively deep accounting functionality, newcomers such as Intuit's QuickBooks and Microsoft Profit forsook some of the power in favor of a friendlier graphical approach. Fortunately, there's no longer a need to choose between a powerful accounting solution and one that's easy to use. But as we enter the 21st century, a new transition is taking place.
