Storage device performance may not be an issue when you work with office application documents such as word processor and spreadsheet files. But when you're dealing with large graphics or presentation files, every additional bit of speed and response-time improvement is welcome. For our NAS device roundup, we tested devices that use BSD Unix, Linux, or Microsoft Windows 2000 Server as a base for their operating systems. Since file sharing and transfers are still the most common uses for NAS devices, we ran NetBench 7.1 to determine the through-put performance of all the contenders.
