While many shipping sectors are in the doldrums, passenger shipping has started 2017 on a strong footing, with a robust and growing newbuilding orderbook and the use of some highly innovative technology. Brittany Ferries ended last year with the announcement that it has signed a letter of intent with the Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft shipyard in Germany to construct a new ship powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG). And there has been a flurry of further ferry orders since then. In Scandinavia, Vard has clinched contracts worth approximately NKr600 million (US$70.6 million) for the construction of two LNG ropax ferries for Torghatten Nord, while Color Line and Ulstein Verft have signed a letter of intent for the construction of the world's largest hybrid vessel.
