Studies on the growth of forest trees at Helsinki University's Institute of Biotechnology have reached an interesting stage. Scientists there have succeeded in speeding up the-growth of thale cress, a plant being used as a tree simulation model. Also, it will soon be possible to modify the lignin content of birch wood without controversial genetic modification A team led by Yrjö Helariutta is studying the ways in which genes regulate tree growth and the properties of the components of wood cells. Knowledge of these matters at the molecular level will have applications in both forestry and wood processing.%Viikin Biotekniikan instituutissa tehty metsäpuiden kasvututkimus on mielenkiintoisessa vaiheessa.
