Pulp screening is an effective means of removing oversize contaminants, fractionating fiber, and Increasing the overall quality of paper. The importance of screening is increasing as the industry is challenged to produce paper for more demanding applications, such as high-resolution, multi-colour printing, and to use furnishes that contain higher levels of contaminants. A number of technologies have supported the advancement of pulp screening including: screen cylinder apertures with optimized micro-geometries, streamlined rotor elements that generate more effective pulsations, and software tools such as AFT SimAudit~(TM) for tuning the screen system. These and various other improvements have enabled mills to achieve higher levels of screen performance while decreasing the overall cost of screening. The benefits of advanced technologies are best demonstrated by mill case studies. This paper reviews how technical innovation progresses from theory to commercial embodiment to real-world industrial benefits.
