Development of health promotion and of the IUHPE presence in Africa

The mission, goals and objectives of the IUHPE in the African continent are obviously the same as in any other Region. We aim at: 1 advocating for investment in health promotion by all sectors; 2 advocating for changes in policy and practice; 3 undertaking activities that contribute to the development of knowledge and practice; 4 disseminating evidence-based knowledge and practical experience; 5 providing mechanisms for the exchange of ideas, experience and knowledge; 6 providing a forum for mutual support and professional advancement. Today, virtually all influential health policy makers and health advocates in Africa are aware that effective health promotion and disease prevention are the only way to really tackle the health problems of the region. We are aware that traditional health care services alone will never stem the flow of sick and dying people into the under-resourced and highly stressed secondary and tertiary health services. We are also well aware that properly organised and resourced participatory community health programmes can empower the people to guard their own health, both through their own behaviour and through community activism to champion their right to live in an environment that does not damage health.
