$6 m US project plans silicon- based laser within five years

In August, the US-based Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) commenced a research project into silicon-based lasers and nanophotonics supported by the US Government's Department of Defense. The project, initially funded with $3.6m (?2.81 m) over a three-year term, is likely to be extended for an optional additional two years for a total of $6 m.
